Review: Breaking The Rules by Cat Lavoie

When twenty-seven year old Roxy Rule’s best friend and roommate accepts a glamorous new job overseas, she expects their relationship to continue as it’s always been—carefree and easy—until they share a heart-stopping kiss moments before his departure. Overcome with mixed emotions, she fights the urge to over analyze the situation and resumes back to her normal life in New York City, working for an intolerable boss at a dead end job, creeping further and further away from her own dreams of becoming a professional chef.

While things become more complicated between her and Ollie, Roxy is sure that nothing can come between two lifelong best friends—not even mild jealousy over a thriving career or a silly little kiss that meant nothing. In fact, it was such a meaningless and forgettable kiss that she convinces herself that it’s not even worth mentioning to her fiancé, although it is all she can think about.

Roxy’s already topsy-turvy life only gets more complicated when her sisters Steffi and Izzie suddenly become her roommates. Steffi is six months into a pregnancy she refuses to discuss and Izzie is in the throes of a premature midlife crisis. Roxy tries to take control of her career, her love life and her sisters – but can she really handle it all? And can the Rule family keep it together – or break under the pressure?

Cat Lavoie has arrived on the chick lit scene!  Her debut novel, Breaking The Rules, kept me up late at night (and on a “work night”, no less!) as I couldn’t put it down.  When I was first approached by Samantha to review, I took one look at the cover and said yes.  I have a habit of reading anything with cute covers.  It doesn’t always work out well, but in this case it was a home run.  Charming cover, interesting characters combined with witty storytelling. I loved the friendship between Roxy and Ollie and how their story unfolds with the added twists to keep the reader on their toes.  Icky significant others, crazy family members, and wild friends complete the picture.  I loved the relationship between the sisters, Roxy, Steffi, and Izzie, and how their relationship with each other grew and became a more solid unit, even through the fights and the secrets being revealed. If you want to believe in happy endings then Roxy is the perfect heroine for you as she searches for what makes her happy.  She falls down and messes up, but she picks herself back up with the help of her friends and family and she moves on towards her happiness.

I cannot wait to see what Cat has in store for us next because clearly this lady has the talent to stick around for a long time to come!

Cat Lavoie was born in the small town of Jonquière in Québec, Canada. At the age of nineteen, she packed up her things (mostly books) and moved to the big city of Montreal where she currently lives with her tempestuous cat Abbie—who is both adorable and quite possibly evil.
An incurable Anglophile since her university days where she studied English Literature, she can often be found daydreaming about her next trip to London. Since she’s an expert at the art of procrastination, Cat is easily distracted by cooking and home improvement shows—even though she’s not particularly good at either.
Cat grew up watching soap operas and legal dramas and—had she not decided to be a claims analyst by day and write chick lit by night—she would have probably become a designer suit-wearing lawyer. Or a character on All My Children (which is what she really wanted to be when she was twelve).
Cat is not sure whether she’s a geek or a nerd—and is afraid she might be both. Breaking the Rules is her first novel.

Welcome Cat Lavoie, author of "Breaking The Rules"

I recently had the opportunity to do a little interview with Cat Lavoie, author of "BREAKING THE RULES". If you don't find yourself adoring her, I have to ask what is wrong with you!?!?  I think we can even forgive her Justin Bieber confession below.
Without further ado, please welcome Cat Lavoie to my book nook!

1.       Which character do you identify the most with from BREAKING THE RULES?

I can definitely relate to Roxy's love of food and cooking. I share her enthusiasm but, sadly, not her talent.

2.       Who would you cast in the movie version of BREAKING THE RULES?

If Emma Stone gained a few pounds, I think she'd be a great Roxy. Robert Pattinson would be a perfect Ollie. I'd pick Rachel McAdams for older sister Izzie and Jennifer Lawrence for younger sister Steffi.

3.       How did you celebrate the publication of BREAKING THE RULES?

I spent a really lovely day with family and friends and had a nice dinner. My best friend made pink book cupcakes to mark the occasion and I (of course!) ate way too many. There were also a few happy dances during the day—especially when I first saw BREAKING THE RULES listed on Amazon!

4.       If you could be on a reality show, which one would it be?

The Amazing Race. I'm pretty sure I'd get eliminated in the first few episodes because my sense of direction is horrible and I'd get lost somewhere in the middle of Siberia—but, still, it looks like a lot of fun.

5.       You used to want to be a soap star on “All My Children”, what would your character’s storyline have been like? (Michelle's note: I never wanted to be an actor on a soap, but I wanted to be a writer.)

Oh, I would totally be devious and sneaky! But, of course, I'd also have a sweet, caring side so no one would ever suspect that I'm a troublemaker. I'd be the character who goes behind people's backs and creates tons of chaos but who also runs a shelter for abandoned puppies. Of course, I'd have an elaborate backstory to explain why I act the way I do.

6.       What does a day in your writing life entail?

I have a full-time job so most of my writing gets done during lunch breaks and evenings. Since my work-in-progress is always on my mind, I'll send myself emails throughout the day with snippets of dialogue and notes. (It looks a bit more professional than jotting them down in the hot pink notebook I carry with me everywhere—but my inbox is a bit chaotic!)

7.       If you weren’t writing you would be…

I'd like to think I'd either be a lawyer or I would have gone to cooking school and opened a diner.

8.       What is that one song that you are embarrassed to tell people you love, but can’t help but sing it every time you hear it?

'Baby' by Justin Bieber. I pretty much know it by heart. Did I just admit that?

9.       Who is your literary crush?

Mr. Darcy from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

10.   What genre would you like to try your hand at writing?

I love watching true crime documentaries so—if I ever decide to venture outside my genre—I'd probably try to write a murder mystery. And then I can say that all those hours of TV were research.

Casting "FINDING LUCAS" by Samantha Stroh Bailey

“Hi, this is an extremely influential Hollywood producer. I’ve read Finding Lucas and want to make the film.”

I’ve imagined this almost implausible scenario so many times and have practiced my reaction in the very unlikely event that it occurs. But, just in case a Hollywood producer does find my novel and thinks it would make a fantastic film, I know exactly who should star in it. Of course, they may have to put on a few pounds or dye their hair, but isn’t that what all great actors do?

Here is a list of my all star cast of characters. If they’re reading this, they know where to find me!
Oh, Jamie. My shy, reserved and sarcastic heroine who doesn’t want to see how bad her relationship with Derek has gotten. She knows, everyone knows, that he’s a total ass, but never considering herself attractive or desired by other men, she’s too scared to let Derek go. Whenever I see Ginnifer Goodwin, in films like Something Borrowed and He’s Just Not That Into You, I think she captures the essence of the unique, natural and insecure girl Jamie is. Jamie is blond, but I think Ginnifer, with her curves, unassuming nature and shy demeanor fits the bill.

The “quintessential metrosexual,” Derek is a man only his mother or a trophy wife could love. He’s good-looking, self-important and utterly concerned with making it to the top. I get a little tug of lust whenever I see Bradley Cooper, but he also has that cold glint in his ice blue eyes that makes him a perfect cad.
Jamie’s best friend, lingerie store owner Hanna, is gorgeous, intimidating and full of self-doubt. Though Megan Fox is currently pregnant, I’m sure she’ll be back to Hollywood standards by the time production starts. She won’t make it in Hollywood otherwise. Her beautiful face and body and deep seated insecurities embody who Hanna is.

Lucas is the boy who got away and the man Jamie hunts down in a hilarious and desperate attempt to find someone to love her. The teenage Lucas has got to be played by Zac Efron, with his magnetic good looks and the hint of a bad boy about him. Ian Somerhalder is smoking hot, and his piercing eyes make my toes curl. Lucas needs someone extraordinary looking to play him, and Ian Somerhalder is all that.
Gentle, kind and easygoing, Jamie’s boss and new friend, Andrew, can only be played by John Krasinski. He is hot in such a relaxed and no fuss way, approachable and smart.

I hope Emily Giffin doesn’t think I’m stealing half of her cast from Something Borrowed, but the easy friendship between Ginnifer and John would work perfectly for Finding Lucas. And if Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan can do it more than once, I figure they can, too.

If Julianne Hough can play a giggly eighteen year old, I think her blonde beauty, enviable body and sweet smile are perfect for Jamie’s little sister, Rachel.

Zany, quirky and just waiting for the universe to solve the world’s problems, Lucy and Zooey Deschanel seem made for each other.

Now, I’ll just wait for that call.

-------------------------

Can you ever really go back to the past?

On her fifth anniversary with boyfriend Derek, Jamie Ross finds herself in a Montreal hotel room wondering how the carefree guy she met in a Chicago bar has turned into “the quintessential metrosexual.” Weighed down by Derek’s disdain for her second hand wardrobe, her unusual family and her low-paying job as an associate producer of a daytime talk show, Jamie reaches a breaking point. And when her new boss plans to reunite lost loves on the show, she remembers Lucas— the boy she’d loved and lost ten years earlier. What follows is a quest that is at times hilarious and at others disastrous as Jamie’s life transforms from run of the mill to absolutely crazy. But will finding Lucas give Jamie everything she’s looking for?

A Must Read: A State of Jane by Meredith Schorr

I've been eagerly anticipating the release of the absolutely fabulous Meredith Schorr's sophmore novel, "A STATE OF JANE" and this week it has finally hit the market!

"Jane Frank is ready to fall in love.  It's been a year since her long term relationship ended and far too long since the last time she was kissed.  With the LSAT coming up she needs to find a long term boyfriend (or husband) before acing law school and becoming a partner at her father's law firm.  There's just one problem: all the guys in New York are flakes.  They seemingly drop off the face of the earth with no warning and no explanation.  Should she join her best friend Marissa in singlehood, making cupcakes and watching True Blood?  Or should she follow her co-worker Andrew's advice and turn the game back on those who scorned her?  As Jane attempts to juggle her own responsibilities and put up with the problems of everyone around her, she starts to realize that the dating life isn't as easy as she originally thought."

Meredith, for those of you that don't know her, wrote "Just Friends With Benefits" and it was such a delightful read full of those best friend type of characters.  I'm sure that "A State of Jane" is going to be just as charming!

I hope you will join me in supporting this lovely lady's work by purchasing "A State of Jane" as well!

Review: Last Minute Love by Romi Moondi

What's a girl to do when she meets the Internet man of her dreams, he's better than she expected, but he lives an ocean away? And let's not forget her parents, who are trying to lock her up in arranged-marriage doom...

In this fast-paced story of culture clash and romantic pursuits, there's a big fat Indian wedding, the struggle to keep a long-distance flame alive, and an unexpected mystery man who could set a new course in motion.

All the while, our heroine abandons what was once an all-consuming man-search, which helps her remember the person she used to be, and the person she hopes to become; the history-loving nerd, the hopeless romantic, and the emerging author with dreams of ditching the corporate rat race.

This is the book of living in the moment, making the grand gesture, and putting it all on the line. This is when Romi Narindra comes alive...

One of my favorite books that I have reviewed this year is Romi Moondi’s “Year of the Chick”. I was so caught up in the adventure of Romi to find a boyfriend before the family could intervene and arrange a marriage for her and the relationship that ensued with James was so much fun.  I jumped at the chance to review the second book in the trilogy, Last Minute Love.  This time around, Romi is going through the joys of having her first book published, trying to survive her sister-turned-Bridezilla’s wedding, and a new romantic interest on the horizon.  I was so intrigued by Erik, I admit that I love a geeky foreign boy the most.  There were warning bells going off as I read about him, but I tried to push them aside.  Of course, this left me as outraged with him as Romi as the story went on. The parents and their dismissive attitude towards what obviously makes their daughter happy had me wanting to step into the pages and shake them a few times. But there was a brief bright moment towards the end of the book where I thought "Aha, they finally are getting it."

Romi Moondi has such a quick wit about her and her characters, clearly based on real life counterparts, are an absolute thrill.  She writes the kind of characters that you want to go be best friends with and hang out gossiping with.  She is an absolute gem of a writer and I'm so thrilled to offer up a review of her books.

And a side note, Romi, HURRY AND WRITE BOOK 3!! I need to know how this story concludes!!!

Author Bio:

I am Canadian, and here are some strange personal facts:

-I wore denim-top-to-bottom in high school (there is a direct inverse relationship between how much denim I wore and how few tongues were launched down my throat at school dances...or anywhere in high school at all).
-A homeless lady in New York once told me "You're just a bitch on vacation with no money!"
-I always hated those insufferable couples who would cuddle and make out on the subway...until I became half of one. But now I'm back to being none of one so I hate them again.

The thing I love most in the world is writing. When I first started publishing on Amazon it was my "crazy" humour side ("The Book of Awful," and "NOT Love Poems For Real Life"). Since then, everything has focused on my "Year of the Chick" series, because it's the most important thing to me in the world right now. I guess that would tend to happen, when your writing is inspired by real life, including all the satisfaction and risks that come from that.

My "Year of the Chick" series can be described as "edgy rom-com," which helps me account for the blunt conversations and mortifying family moments in the book ;-).
Book 3 in the "Year of the Chick" series will be written and released in 2013; until then I have some adventures to go on!

Happy Publication Day, Jen Tucker!!!

Happy Publication Day to my awesome friend, Jen Tucker!!!!!

Yes, she checked to make sure her panties were not inside out when her day began heading south. Jen Tucker returns with her latest memoir, The Day I Lost My Shaker of Salt. Her dogs sample ant trap delicacies, a dentist appointment goes awry, and she battles her own version of animal road rage on one thorny day. Tender at times, funny as always, one of your favorite girlfriends returns to show you there are silver linings in the midst of bad days.

Jen’s debut memoir, The Day I Wore My Panties Inside Out, was a 2011 Goodreads Semifinalist in the humor category. She is a regular contributor at Survival for Blondes, where she marries humor with preparedness. Jen lives in Indiana with her husband and three children.

You should all rush over to Amazon and buy her FABULOUS book, The Day I Lost My Shaker Of Salt! I have had the privilege to advance read this and it deserves all the stars!

Congratulations, Jen!! I’m so excited for you!
